Imagine you take your home as you know it. Take only the very important stuff, everything you need in order to survive. Put it all in a car. It has everything filled two humans need for the next couple of days. This is your home now, your flat with all the remaining stuff still exists but does not matter as you are in the middle of nowhere - most of the time you do not even have phone reception - having nothing else than this car. Your life is dependent on this two tonne of metal. Not just that - it is your life. Knowing this you both create a very special relationship to this car. This car contains your life and is responsible for how it turns out. You arrange everything, food, water, tools to be safe for the future.
Every now and then you need to buy fuel as well. Today you have to refuel very late as you were busy enjoying a wonderful national park the whole day. You drive up at the gas station, the vibe is the same as always. Your car with shining lights in the dark, the bright neon light of the gas station in a tiny country town. You wash your windows, refuel the car, the other person is going into the shop up to the counter ready to pay. The cashier tells her if she buys something she gets a discount, after hesitating to buy anything, looking at some chocolate bars, he finds her pretty and gives her the discount anyways. Nice one, saved $10! The money you will later use to travel a long way. The fuel was always expensive but worth every penny for the fact it can bring you so incredibly long. Both being back in the car where the radio is still illuminated and playing, ready to leave this little place of civilisation again. You drive into pure darkness, where nowhere any further light exists apart from some stars and your headlights, to a place your phone navigates you to. Seeing other people at the campsite but not even socialising with them tonight as you have each other. It is way too exhausting for this evening getting to know new people, you two are so close, you do not need anybody else in this situation. Eating your dinner and settling for bed you both still - after more than seven weeks - not entirely realized what you are doing. This is one of the biggest journeys of your life, especially mentally.
Many other days you obviously refueled during the day, creating a similar situation of stopping at the roadhouse for a couple of minutes after a couple hours of driving and then becoming ready to head off again. A small break from all the intense thinking and discussions, before very soon heading off again. Being back on the road, this powerful road of nothing where every meter seems to be eaten by the car, you drive with constant speed all day long, not really feeling anymore that you are driving, it becomes something else. The road gets soaked up by you two, observing everything, seeing how nature works, describing the most abstract stuff, of how humans settled, how stones developed and how you can see that in their shapes, how there are still places on earth which are not at all possessed or altered by humans, how nature developed everywhere on earth at the same time but in a totally different way. You both feel how powerful the road is and what it makes with your minds, becoming more abstract and philosophical than ever before. You two are isolated in one place together for 24 hours a day, still driving with a fast speed for hours and hours through the vast nothing where no other humans are, covering hundreds of kilometres each day, visiting so many different yet totally same places, the next roadhouse miles away and only the same old road leading you.
This is one of the most beautiful and maybe most powerful things humans can observe and use - the road.
